As people around the world apply special filters in apps to enhance their look, apps have become scrutinized because of it. If you can change the way your jaw looks, your skin, your eyes, your hair, and pretty much every other feature, then people don’t know what you really look like anymore. There are even reports about people getting plastic surgery done to look more like their face filters.
55% of facial plastic surgeons in 2017 saw patients who wanted surgery to help them look better in selfies.
So why has it become so popular?
Well, according to research and data, some people have low self-esteem and feel as though the filters make them look more appealing to their friends and family so that they get more likes and comments. This constant stream of feel good events triggers dopamine
, and it’s quite addictive. Obviously narcissism and high self-esteem are also to blame, as people want to show off to everybody and make them believe that their lives are so perfect.
Face filter technology was never meant to hide people, it was meant to enhance them and allow them to show their personality in videos and pictures. But that’s not really what happened with face filter technology. It became a default for hiding behind who you truly are. Even dating apps have become a haven for women who post pictures with filters. Unfortunately for men, when they show up on the date, they usually find somebody totally different than who was in the pictures.
It’s Catfish 2.0
Face filters, masks and other effects were always meant to enhance the personality of the individual by adding a bit of fantasy to a world where reality sometimes sucks. It also allows individuals to open up a bit more and feel more comfortable in front of the camera. Think of it as a wardrobe change or a costume on the set of a movie. Now you can try on different personas to show off your humor, drama, romantic side, or any other genre that you want to act in. This is what the true intention behind face filter technology should be and will hopefully become in the future.
